Shared ownership offers an accessible route to homeownership for those looking to take their first step onto the property ladder. With this scheme, you purchase between 10% and 75% of a property while paying rent on the remaining portion.
The financial structure is designed to be manageable - you only need a 5% deposit of your purchased share, with a mortgage covering the remainder of your share. The rent on the portion you do not own is subsidised, helping to keep your monthly outgoings more affordable.
You have the option to increase your ownership through a process called 'staircasing', eventually allowing you to own 100% of your property.
As a shared owner, you take on the responsibilities of a homeowner, including repairs and maintenance. However, you also gain the freedom to personalise your property, from repainting and redecorating to renovating your kitchen to suit your taste.
